Model responsibilities
- Models entering the Gay Adult industry should expect to test for Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and to provide certificates to prove their status for film or photographic shoots if they are working with other individuals in a sexual context
- A GUM Clinic can carry out these tests and can provide a certificate, normally for a fee. Models will need to provide photographic ID, i.e. passport, in order to obtain a certificate and the reference number, i.e. passport number, of that ID should appear on the certificate. Some clinics that provide this service are listed in the resources section. ( Please note not all clinics will be prepared to offer certificates - you should check beforehand ) The tests will normally include specific tests for the following:
- HIV
- Gonorrhoea
- Syphilis
- Hepatitis B and C
- Chlamydia
- Non-specific urethritis (NSU)
- Models should ensure that sexual health is discussed with them at the interview / audition stage and that they are happy with provisions that will be made for the shoot
- Models that are taking part in any anal sex, either protected (with condoms) or unprotected (without condoms), to have a certificate that is dated within 30 days of the date of the work. (Please note some producers may still require a certificate dated within 20 or 14 days of the shoot.)
- Models who are taking part in any unprotected oral sex activity (without condoms) to have a certificate that is dated within 30 days of the date of the work. (Please note some producers may still require a certificate dated within 20 or 14 days of the shoot.)
- Models should inform producers of any unsafe sex (anal sex without the use of condoms) they have had since they last undertook tests. A model that has unsafe sex with another person on day one is able to pass on HIV as little as four days after infection. As it takes the body between eight weeks and three months, the window period, to develop detectable antibodies against HIV any unsafe sex undertaken in this window period renders certificate invalid.
- It is recommended that all models entering the Gay Adult Industry should be vaccinated against Hepatitis B and where possible Hepatitis A. They should be regularly screened for Hepatitis A, B & C
- Models should ask to see the certificates of models they will perform with before shooting and should be happy about their validity - especially if they are relied on as the sole means of protection where condoms are not used for anal sex
- Models may be asked to present themselves for tests at a GUM Clinic prior to a shoot at the request of a producer
- Models should be happy about the precautions taken against STIs on a shoot before agreeing to take part.
