Clone Zone make a public statement about Bareback Porn:

Clone Zone is in full support of GAIKISS in promoting the code of practice for both gay and straight movie makers. Clone Zone has always taken the issue of bareback porn seriously. Clone Zone is the largest gay retailer in the UK and would like to stress in the future Clone Zone will only sell movies from companies that have paperwork to prove that all models involved have been tested for HIV before filming. Clone Zone has always highlighted bareback films in their stores with a ‘play safe’ sticker and will continue to do so.

GMFA send out a Press Release regarding the Newsnight Programme and Bareback Porn:

BBC’s Newsnight report on models who apparently become infected performing in bareback porn films highlights the risks that gay men take if they have unprotected sex. The performers were assured that their activity was safe, as they had received clear HIV antibody tests prior to filming.  It appears though that at least one of the performers was HIV positive and after the filming was completed four of the actors received positive HIV tests.  With a third of HIV positive gay men in the UK remaining unaware of their HIV status, this story demonstrates some of the inherent difficulties in knowing the HIV status of sexual partners.
GMFA’s Matthew Hodson said, “It’s deeply upsetting when someone becomes HIV positive and the guys in this case seem to have been vulnerable and given extremely poor advice. An HIV antibody test has a window period of several weeks after transmission of HIV before it will give a positive result. A certificate of an HIV negative test result isn’t enough to prove your HIV status, unless you have taken no sexual risks in the period before you took the test and obviously no sexual risks after you took the test.”
The Newsnight report did not establish whether the performers infected each other, or which performer was the initial source of the infection.
“All of the performers took similar risks with each other and four of them are now infected with HIV, which is probably equally devastating to all of them,” said Hodson. “The truth is we don’t have built in HIV detectors and guesswork is no guarantee of avoiding risks. Fucking without condoms is the most common method of HIV transmission and HIV negative men who continue to fuck without condoms with men whose status they can not know are likely to be exposed to HIV.”
GMFA’s latest campaign challenges the expectation that gay men can know with any confidence the HIV status of their sexual partners. The campaign is designed to encourage men to think about the ways they establish someone’s HIV status and to use condoms to avoid sexual risks.  The ads, featuring a makeshift HIV detector, highlight the uncertainty of knowing a guy’s status for sure.
“We welcome any moves on the part of the gay porn industry to protect their performers,” added Hodson. “I suspect that so long as there continues to be a demand for bareback porn there will continue to be companies that produce it. If gay men don’t want porn stars to risk their health, they should stop buying bareback porn.”
